Background
The Commissioners' Toolkit enables commissioners of parenting services and others in similar roles to find out about existing parenting support programmes that can be replicated for use in their area.
Parenting programmes are defined as any formal intervention designed to support the parent/child relationship.
For more information on the use of parenting programmes see general guidance on offering parenting support.
The Academy is now responsible for the Toolkit originally commissioned from Parenting UK by the Department for Education and Skills (now the Department for Children, Schools and Families) and is reviewing it to reflect these developments as well as its commitment to the quality of parenting programmes available.
Using the toolkit
You can use the Toolkit in a variety of ways to find out about programmes which may meet the priorities for parenting support in your area and match the characteristics and needs of local parents.
Please note – information regarding the programmes listed in the Toolkit has been provided by the authors or developers.
Points to consider in reviewing programme evaluations:
- Is it independent and objective?
- Has it been undertaken by an organisation or individual with the appropriate skills and knowledge?
- Details of outcomes and effectiveness.
- What level of evaluation is described; for example, consumer feedback, pre and post questionnaires, controlled studies or the most rigorous randomised control trials?
